A fair bunch of releases that may well interest you’s this week - and a few from last week which we shamefully missed. New stuff from Hatcham Social, Dananananaykroyd, Underground Railroad, BLK JKS, This Town Needs Guns + a few more very interesting bits & pieces.
Kap Bambino - Red Sign/Acid Eyes (7″ on Because)
Video: New album teaser
Their self-released album ‘Zero Life Night Vision’ came out way back in 2006, so we’re well overdue some new stuff from Kap Bambino. This 7″ is a mighty comeback and the new album won’t be out til May, so well worth grabbing. There’s a few signed copies over here.
The Low Anthem - Oh My God, Charlie Darwin (self-released album)
Some rootsy folksy Americana for you now, The Low Anthem’s third album has been picked up by a lot of writers as a ‘new Fleet Foxes’ - but we don’t need one and this is quite different anyways. It’s more authentic and even generic alt-country, members swapping instruments freely and having a good old miserable time. It’ll get a UK release soon enough - the single ‘Charlie Darwin’ was released on 7″ over here for Darwin Day and a few labels are sniffing around it - but Rough Trade are stocking a few copies of the original, hand-stamped and self-released CD here.
Beth Jeans Houghton - Golden (7″ on Static Caravan)
Oh, this is delightful. 18 year-old Beth is from Newcastle and this fanastic single was produced by Adem, who says “I was immediately struck by the strength of her voice(s) and the seemingly unlimited supply of catchy melody, alongside a really healthy amount of the unusual.” She’s a fragile, intriguing talent and this 7″ is the start of something bigger. Buy here.
Various Production and Gerry Mitchell - The Invisible Lodger (Album on Fire Records)
MP3: Various Production and Gerry Mitchell - Clerks
Various seem to be on a mission to release as much wildly differing music as possible, in as many formats as exist. Vinyls, CDs and exclusive mailouts seem to drop constantly, all taking the electronic/dubstep sound into territories as disparate as world and folk. This linkup with Scottish spoken word artist Gerry Mitchell gives the album a more straightforward spaced-out electronic vibe than it’s predecessor, The World Is Gone. Grab that track up there, and if you like it you’ll love the album - buy here. Also, go and check out this mix the group did recently for Clash Magazine - it’s nice.
Micachu & The Shapes - Jewellery (Album on Accidental)
So I’m sure a lot of people are planning to hate this album - Esser and Polly Scattergood get loads for being slightly annoying - but unfortunately for those people the record is pretty fucking great. Maybe everything sounds like sixth-form poetry when you write it out in a review, but suffice to say that sometimes words and music just work together and there’s no point over-analysing it - if you like what you’ve heard on her MySpace and elsewhere, grab the album.
Dananananaykroyd - Black Wax (7″ on Best Before Records)
There’s lots of them, and they’re noisy - Dananananaykroyd release a single ahead of the upcoming album and it’s sweet. It’s not due til the 23rd but Rough Trade are shipping some this week so get your hands on it here.
Underground Railroad - Pick The Ghost… EP (CD on One Little Indian)
The Parisian trio that gave us a treat at Offset have dropped a nice little treat for their fans - this is a 5 track CD of outtakes from their album sessions, many of which are firm live favourites. It’s more of the nice arty rock you’ve come to expect from them - they sound so assured already. Buy here.
Hatcham Social - Murder In The Dark (7″ on Fierce Panda)
You MUST have seen them around by now - last year they gigged like heroes, including a set at Offset, and they’ve kept us all waiting patiently for the album. Well it’s due - next Monday on Fierce Panda - but this little teaser should tide you over. Grab it here.
This Town Needs Guns - Animals (LP on Smalltown America)
These are great. Here in the UK, there isn’t enough of this fantastic full band talent that doesn’t descend into all-out wankery. The band know when to let go and when to reel it in, and they’re not a throwaway singles band either - I highly recommend grabbing this vinyl from Smalltown America - over here.
BLK JKS - Mystery EP (12″ on Secretly Canadian)
Hell this is expensive at a tenner for four tracks, but the music is pretty damn good. They’re from South Africa, but sound like another Brooklyn band - a good thing. They’re shit hot - all rhythm, stunning vocals, energy - check them out with these mp3s, and grab the 12″ here, and there are a few copies of their previous 10″ over here.
